ANOTHER VIEW: Remembering bobby socks, short skirts and tennis shoes

By David Simmons  |  Years ago, after coming off the Appalachian Trail (AT) in late summer 1988, I ended up in Washington D.C., living on the top floor of a nine-story apartment building just across the street from the Department of Transportation.  I could sit out on my balcony and see the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool, and listen to the nightly gunshots coming from off in the distance in northeast D.C.

ANOTHER VIEW: If you don’t put many miles on your car, rotate your tires

By Catherine Brack |  Several years ago, I went car-free. Living in the heart of Washington, D.C., the transition to a purely pedestrian experience was not too difficult.  Friends were happy to lend me their cars for short errands, there were ZipCars you could rent aplenty, and for longer term rentals, the airport and Amtrak station were only a few subway stops away.

From Washington's Rules of Civility.

BRACK: What happened to civility in discourse in our country?

By Elliott Brack   |  We want to yell out to everyone for them to think as we ask: “Hey!  What happened to civility?” Have you recognized how we have become so downright mean and uncouth in our relationships to people who don’t agree with us? Will our country ever be able to return to the time when people got along with one another?

FOCUS: Remembering the FDR Memorial and the ideas behind FDR’s life

By Catherine Brack, Washington D.C. | As a resident of our nation’s capitol for more than 18 years, I have been to the Clinton, Bush and Obama White Houses, experienced 9/11 in a way that was far too close for comfort, cheered a visit by the pope, and witnessed an earthquake, hurricanes and tornadoes. I also have shoveled more snow than I ever thought possible.
