NEWS BRIEFS: Habitat, Lawrenceville to partner and build four houses

The City of Lawrenceville and the Gwinnett County Habitat for Humanity are partnering in a project to build four houses in the city limits of Lawrenceville in 2023.  At the December 14 meeting, the City Council approved an agreement allowing the project to begin in the first quarter 2023.

NEWS BRIEFS: Georgia Gwinnett researchers study food insecurity

By Collin Elder  |  The growth of food insecurity among families has accelerated in recent years, according to Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) faculty members Dr. Jenna Andrews-Swann and Dr. Gregory Gullette. The pair, who teach anthropology at GGC, along with their students, seek to study the physical, social and emotional effects of food insecurity among underserved populations in the Atlanta metro region (AMR).

The Rowen Foundation will officially break ground on Rowen, the 2,000-acre knowledge community in eastern Gwinnett County, on Dec. 9, 2022 at 2 p.m. But instead of turning over more dirt, Governor Brian Kemp and Gwinnett Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and special guests will plant the first of what will eventually be thousands of new trees on site.

NEWS BRIEFS: Peach State FCU announces merger with 2 credit unions

Two more South Carolina credit unions are merging with Peach State Federal Credit Union of Lawrenceville.  Credit unions in Abbeville and Pickens, S.C., announced the mergers this week. The announcement follows votes last week by the two credit unions during a special meeting of their members. Both mergers, which have been approved by the National Credit Union Administration, are effective December 1, 2022.

 C.A.S.E. Discount Flooring of Buford is expanding,  which will result in 15 new jobs and $1.2 million capital investment in the City of Buford over the next 10 years. The vinyl flooring distributor moved into a 2,200-square-foot facility at 5306 Palmero Court, increasing production by 10 percent.

NEWS BRIEFS: Peachtree Christian Health seeks $500,000 to prevent closing

Gwinnett is in danger of losing its only adult health care facility for cognitive and physical decline.  Peachtree Christian Health may close unless it can raise $500,000 by Thanksgiving Day.  President Anne Mancini said earlier this month that insurmountable financial hardships, starting with the pandemic, and continuing, had brought this about.

NEWS BRIEFS: Lawrenceville to name Mullin as new police chief

The sole finalist for the new police chief of Lawrenceville is John Henry Mullin, who spent 15 years as one of the initial policemen in Sandy Springs, says City Manager Chuck Warbington. Mullin also was with the Fulton County Police Department for nine years as a uniformed patrol officer.
