NEWS BRIEFS: Two from Gwinnett to named to Veterans Hall of Fame

Two military veterans from Gwinnett are among the 15 people that will be inducted in the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame for 2023.   The two are Air Force Lt. Col. James Wesley Williams who now lives in Norcross, and is a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, and Army Sgt. Carvis Pittman Williams of Snellville, who served in World War II, and will be honored posthumously.

NEWS BRIEFS: Lawrenceville plans its linear mural on Jackson Street

The Lawrenceville Arts Commission (LAC) is launching the city’s first community mural project to transform a main throughway along Jackson Street into an artistic area. The mural, to be created by artist Teresa Abboud, will be located on the low wall adjacent to the Post Office between Pike and Crogan Streets.

NEWS BRIEFS: GGC seeks volunteers for exercise program

The Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education at Georgia Gwinnett College is seeking  volunteers from the wider community for participation in a 10-week exercise program. The program will help people sharpen hands-on skills, while gaining experience in a practical fitness setting.

NEWS BRIEFS: Up 9%, Georgia Gwinnett College now tops 12,000

Enrollment at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) maintained its upward trajectory as students started classes for the fall semester. Preliminary numbers from the college show enrollment at more than 12,000 students (new and returning) which is nine percent above fall 2022.

Two new members have been appointed to serve on the Jackson EMC Foundation Board of Directors. Dee Anderson, of Gwinnett County, and Towanna Johnson, of Barrow County, have been appointed to serve a three-year term by the Jackson EMC Board of Directors.

NEWS BRIEFS: Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce named best in USA

The Gwinnett Chamber of been awarded “Chamber of the Year”for 2023 by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) during the recent annual ACCE conference in Salt Lake City. This is the first time the Gwinnett Chamber has received this honor. The Gwinnett  Chamber was selected as a finalist in the program in 2006.

An exhibition by renowned sculptor Olu Amoda, winner of the $50,000 Hudgens Prize for 2022 for Georgia artists, will open Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Fowler Gallery of the Jacqueline Casey Hudgens Center for Art and Learning in Duluth.
