FOCUS: County taking applications for second “Gwinnett 101” class

By Shaunieka Taste | The Gwinnett Commissioners have launched a new local program, Gwinnett 101, aimed at developing and nurturing informed and engaged residents, students and business owners in the county. It is a 10-week crash course in Gwinnett County Government operations. The first class has been graduated, and officials are looking for applicants for a fall session.

By Jennifer Hart | Citizens of Gwinnett County should applaud their Board of Commissioners. On June 23, the Board amended the tethering ordinance that was set to take effect on July 1. The previous ordinance, modified and adopted by the commissioners on March 17, would have allowed up to 14 hours a day of unsupervised tethering on a trolley system.

By Jock Ellis | CUMMING, Ga., June 30, 2015 — NBA hoops was the first thing I heard when I would hop aboard a MARTA bus headed toward the Lindbergh Station.

Two guys, one on either side of the aisle, would be deep in conversation about the previous night’s game. Both clearly enjoyed getting to talk about something they obviously loved. One guy was a 40ish black man wearing work khakis while the other, a 30-something white guy, was dressed in a three-piece, blue pinstripe suit. Their conversations would run from before I hopped on until we disembarked to await the train. And maybe after.

FOCUS: Rainbow Village dedicates new buildings, marking another milestone

By Nancy Yancey | Rainbow Village, a transitional housing community in Duluth that serves homeless families with children, marked another milestone recently. Over 250 supporters gathered to celebrate the opening of their new Community Center and six new apartments. Bishop Keith Whitmore of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta led the blessing of the buildings.

Rainbow Village began 24 years ago at Christ Episcopal Church in Norcross. As an outreach ministry of the church, Rainbow House was formed in 1991 in a house that was leased from Georgia Power which was converted into a duplex.

On that day 160,000 allied troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of the Normandy coast in northern France. Less than a year later Adolph Hitler was dead and the war in Europe was finally over.

FOCUS: Community Foundation awards $160,000 in 30th anniversary grants

By Paige Havens | The Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia (CFNEG) is awarding $160,217 in grants to 33 non-profit organizations in our community as part of the Foundation’s 30th Anniversary celebration. These awards are part of the Foundation’s annual discretionary grant disbursements that are gifted to help non-profit organizations further key projects, programs or community initiatives.

Julie Keeton Arnold, 2015 Grants Committee Chair shares: “Our goal was to award at least 30 grants to honor the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, but we had to stay within our granting budget.
