FOCUS: Judge explains why Gwinnett will participate in business court model

By Randy Rich, judge, Superior Court of Gwinnett County | How fast the trial calendar moves is critical to the resolution of cases. Unfortunately, there are usually several obstacles.

FOCUS: Having affordable health care should not be a financial burden

By Jack Bernard, Peachtree City, Ga. | So far, over 12 million people have been enrolled in health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act. Millions more have gotten Medicaid via the expansion option, for a total of 20 million. Obviously, there is still a long way to go to achieve full coverage for all of our citizens, but we should not denigrate our progress thus far. Let us remind you of what we faced before the first open enrollment period began in October, 2013.

FOCUS: Searching the Internet provides good value for trip to India

By Frank Sharp | My wife, Pearl, and I had always wanted to take a trip to India. Fortunately, Pearl found a Cyber Monday package deal from Friendly Planet tour which included the airplane ticket on Air India from JFK to New Delhi for about $1,500. Normally, the plane ticket itself would be about that much. This price included all hotels and meals, except lunch, and all ground transportation. Wow. We scooped it up.

We came to New York a day early. After touring New York City, we caught the Air India direct non-stop flight from JFK to New Delhi. It was packed. After 12 hours, we finally landed. The food served onboard was good and the flight was smooth.

FOCUS: Once selling a business, you must get out of the way!

By Jim Nelems, Bluffton, S.C. | It is no secret that most new businesses do not survive into a second generation of owners. Our two firms, The Marketing Workshop and Compass Research, are now operated by our daughter, Sherri Taylor, and husband, Scott.

FOCUS: Time and pressure is in geology, but also in the creative process

By Karen Burnette Garner | In the field of geology, the study of rocks and their creation come down to two pretty simple ideas: time and pressure. Those elements take everyday materials and transform them into something altogether different. Precious stones are the result of time and pressure on the crystallization of minerals. Coal becomes diamond, sea sand and creatures become limestone and slate, rocks become different rocks through the forces of pressure-created heat and time. Time and pressure can allow the most fragile tree root to split the massive boulder.
