FOCUS: Leaders celebrate innovative new facility, The Water Tower 

By Deborah Tuff |  County leaders rolled up their sleeves to cut the ribbon for and celebrate the completion of The Water Tower – an innovative center in Gwinnett, bringing education, co-working and research together under one roof. It is the first facility of its kind in the world as it conducts research on the water and wastewater industry, and also helps train water technologists of the future.

Monica Padman, a Gwinnett County native, is one who beat the odds to become a success. She is co-host of a popular podcast, Armchair Expert, hosted by Hollywood actor Dax Shepherd, husband of actress Kristin Bell.

FOCUS: Swan Queen ballet returns to Buford’s Sylvia Beard Theater

SUWANEE, Ga.  |  Suwanee Ballet will return to the Sylvia Beard Theater at Buford Community Center with Swan Queen, a shortened version of the classical ballet Swan Lake. The performances will be on April 29 at 6:30 p.m. and April 30, with two performances, at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

FOCUS: Lawrenceville, Hudgens partner with art installation

By Melissa Hardegree  | Art is now a way of life in Lawrenceville, with a newly formed partnership between the City and The Hudgens Center for Art and Learning.  Master works from the Hudgens’ permanent collection can now be viewed at Lawrenceville City Hall.  Works from the collection will rotate on an ongoing basis – providing new and exciting art for the enjoyment of the community.

FOCUS: Summit Chase converts to scratch-based restaurant March 9

By Nicole Newsom  |  Summit Chase Country Club, a longtime Gwinnett staple since its establishment in the 1970s, will move away from the traditional country club concept and will soon open its doors as a scratch-based kitchen, featuring farm-to-table food. It will be named The Kitchen at Summit Chase, and open to the public on Wednesday, March 9.

FOCUS: Why teacher tenure is a good practice for schools

By Alexander Tillman  |  You hear a lot of talk about tenure these days, as the State Board of Regents have modified it for University System employees.

Tenure is defined as status granted to an employee, usually after a probationary period, indicating that the position or employment is permanent. It is a strange and controversial subject especially in education. In reality it means a teacher cannot be terminated unless the cause is grievous. The question arises: does this system help or hurt education?
