BRACK: Wounded Warrior Project under fire for high overhead

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | People shower lots of attention on military veterans today.

Perhaps it’s because we now have an all-volunteer military. Maybe it’s because with the proliferation of media now, the average American knows more about our troops engaged in military activity all over the world. Perhaps it’s the new patriotism since 9/11. Whatever the reason, people in our country shower a lot of attention on helping veterans of the military service.

FOCUS: Deaths from police chases ought to cause us to re-think issue

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | You tell me: why do we have so much talk about gun control, shootings and deaths in the United States, when automobile accident deaths are just as prevalent, actually slight more, than gun deaths?

BRACK: The political outlook after the Iowa voting in caucus

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | After all the concentration on Iowa, the presidential candidates have moved on, and now are campaigning in other early-round states. What can we take away from the Iowa results? Several things.

BRACK: Continued frustration when fighting the telephone monopoly

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Oh, the frustration of fighting a bureaucracy, any bureaucracy!

It started out with AT&T installing high-speed fiber optics in our office building. Eventually came a call from AT&T, suggesting that this faster Internet service would be the cat’s meow for me.

BRACK: Some smaller city and county governments merge

Hospital merger talks with Northside moving along well

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Gwinnett is in the “quiet period” when nothing is heard much about a possible merger between Gwinnett Medical Center and Northside Hospital. The parties are doing their due diligence before announcing if the merger will go forward, and under what terms.

HARRELL: Wedding at home plate only one element of 1950 Ga. State League

By Dr. Lanier Harrell | For the Jesup Bees professional Class D baseball team after World War II, attendance was never very good. (Other teams in the league were Douglas, Fitzgerald, Tifton, Baxley, Eastman, Dublin and Vidalia.) Many special nights were tried to boost attendance, Ladies’ Night, various giveaways and lucky drawings. The Bees’ most unusual attraction in 1950 was a real wedding at home plate, and it would be long remembered. It happened this way.

BRACK: Seeing Book of Mormon at the Fox Theatre: Not so much a delight

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Several people urged us to go see the road company of The Book of Mormon, saying they thought we would like it.

We went to the Fox Wednesday night, and came away not excited about the musical some say is so great. To us, it just was not up to par of stage performances we have seen before. Since it’s a musical with lots of toe-tapping dances, I would have thought a person would come away with the lyrics and beat of one of the songs in your mind. Didn’t happen.

BRACK: Gambling, medical marijuana and two movies for you to enjoy

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Two groups which we oppose have made surprising progress this year. We refer to those wanting the Georgia Legislature to approve gambling and medical marijuana in Georgia. We don’t think these are good ideas.

These groups have insidiously made their way into the minds of many people extolling the virtues of casino gambling and introducing emotion on the medical use of marijuana. They even want horse racing and pot growing in Georgia.
