BRACK: That Brit system of picking a new leader can have its advantages

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | While the United States has been focused on campaigning for the presidency all of 18 months, look what took place in Great Britain in the last few weeks.

The English voted by a 52-48 percent margin that they wanted out of the European Union, ready to go on their own. That was June 23. Then the prime minister resigned the next day.

BRACK: Several reasons for visiting Canada in these hot times

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | There are several reasons for you to visit Canada these days. We just returned from a nice trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Here are reasons to go to Canada now.
First, it’s cool. We left 95 degrees in Georgia, flew to Toronto, had a two-hour layover and arrived after nine hours’ travel in St. John’s to 50 degree weather. During the entire 10 days there, it never got beyond 72 degrees.

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Many of us do not recognize how many government services we have. For instance, when motorists are driving down Interstate 16 toward Savannah, south of Macon you see a sign for the town of Allentown. Motorists along about a 20-mile section of this interstate are under the protection of the Allentown Volunteer Fire Department. The department often makes emergency runs — about 16 percent of its calls — for accidents or auto fires on the Interstate.

BRACK: Continued presentation of gory journalism hurts the media

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Are you as frustrated as I am over the cheap way the media is now covering “local news?”

Several years ago, it was the electronic media, principally local television, which began showing us more “blood and guts” in local news.

BRACK: Brexit was, after all, not a binding vote; New possibilities?

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Virtually overlooked in the hullabaloo of Britain leaving the European Union is the fact that it’s not yet a done deal. After all the referendum was not binding. While a 52-48 split is pretty substantial, it was not a binding referendum.

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Last week we had the best peach of the 2016 season. Man alive! Do I enjoy a juicy sweet Georgia peach.

Now’s the prime time for its eating. Some people enjoy peaches in different cooked desserts or ice cream, and these are good.

BRACK: Remember those water tank slogans? Put ‘em to work again

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | Ever happen to you? Ever fail to see something right in front of you? Or another time, did you ever give something away, and then later regret your action?

That could be happening to Gwinnett County government these days, as it searches for a new slogan that succinctly identifies the diverse community that Gwinnett has become.

BRACK: Graphic presentations, sheriff candidate, a bridge and Z names

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | We saw this the other day and liked it: “If your data has fewer than 20 pieces of information, a graphic presentation is not needed.”

How many civic clubs presentations are ruined because the audio-visual won’t work? But how many times is the audio visual not of high quality, or it presents TOO MUCH info? Many times, just plain speaking is superior to poor quality AV.
