BRACK: Azaleas may have survived freezing temps; be patient ‘til spring

BRACK: Azaleas may have survived freezing temps; be patient ‘til spring

By Elliott Brack  |  Remember those long days of below freezing temperature in Atlanta in December? Bet it played havoc with your outdoor plants and bushes.  It sure did mine. What looks particularly bad in our yard are the azalea bushes.  Before the heavy freeze, their leaves were healthy-looking and green. But after the freezing hit them, their leaves first turned brown, and lately many have been shed.

BRACK: Conditions in no-war zones in Ukraine continue to be terrible

By Elliott Brack  |  The reports we see about the war in Ukraine come to us in the warmth and safety of our home, through television, and through our social media platforms. It’s hard to imagine how terrible conditions are there.

BRACK: Here is the list of the new names for Army bases

By Elliott Brack |  Since GwinnettForum recently commented on Army bases named for Confederates, who are these bases now going to be named for?  Here’s the list:

* From Fort A.P. Hill to Fort Walker: Dr. Mary Walker was the Army’s first female surgeon and was ultimately awarded the Medal of Honor for her service during the Civil War. …

BRACK: Georgia made 3 mistakes in the college championship game

By Elliott Brack  |  Most Georgians, even us stalwart Georgia Tech fans, must be elated at the way the Georgia Bulldogs dominated the college championship game in defeating Texas Christian University 65-7.  Yes, I’ll admit I was worried about playing TCU, for the manner it had shown in its 13-0 regular season, often coming back to win every game.

BRACK: Book about Lee changed my mind on military base names

By Elliott Brack  |  The book, Robert E. Lee and Me, was written by Ty Seidule, an author I had never heard of.  Though I hesitated in opening the book, I’m glad I did.  For it is an amazing book, one that thoroughly changed my mind about renaming military posts for Confederate leaders.

BRACK: With 6 loaded guns in Publix, man may not be convicted as felon

By Elliott Brack  |  Did you hear about the story published recently of a guy found to be carrying six loaded guns in a restroom at a Publix in downtown Atlanta? The story was in The New York Times on January 3. This person had  four handguns in his jacket pocket, plus a 12-gauge shotgun and AR-15 rifle in a guitar case. This happened in March of 2021.

BRACK: Peachtree Corners showing how to produce State of the City

By Elliott Brack | Here’s to an innovation in communication between governments and the people they represent.  We commend the City of Peachtree Corners, Mayor Mike Mason and its city council, for not hosting an event to tell a few people about the state of the city, but in presenting a 22 minute video outlining the present activities of the city as Year 2022 closed out.

BRACK: About the carol “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”

BRACK: About the carol “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”

By Elliott Brack  |  At this time of year, words of Christmas carols reverberate in my mind, giving me pleasure.  This carol, “It came upon the midnight clear,” has particularly been on my mind this year. The carol comes from 1849, when Edward Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Mass., wrote the words in a poem. It is said that the poem was first heard by parishioners gathered in Sears’ home on Christmas Eve.

BRACK: A cheer for Senator Dixon for proposing higher chair’s salary

By Elliott Brack  |  Let’s hear a brisk “Hurrah” to Republican Senator Clint Dixon of Buford. Recently he announced that he would seek legislation to increase the salary of the Gwinnett County Commission chairman.   The position of chair of the County Commission is the lowest in the five-county metro Atlanta area, being paid $86,920 annually.
