NEWS BRIEFS: Economy dooms proposed GBC-People’s bank merger

Georgia Banking Company, Inc. (“GBC”) and Peoples BankTrust, Inc.(“Peoples”) have jointly announced a mutual agreement to terminate their merger agreement, previously announced on November 10, 2021. At that time, it was thought that  Peoples would merge into GBC in a cash and stock transaction with an aggregate value of approximately $58 million.

The last Mystery Photo didn’t fool some people.  No leaves were not blown in. Sara Rawlins, Lawrenceville, responded first:  “I believe that picture is of the carpet at the Gwinnett Gas South Convention Center, taken from the second floor….”

Gladstone Ferle Snell

Gladstone Ferle Snell, 90, of Snellville passed away at his home July 3, 2022. Ferle and his twin brother Clyde Earle were born October 23, 1931 to Edwin and Mable Snell of Snellville. He married Neita Faye Johnson November 25, 1955.

BRACK: Gwinnettians work on dedicating 8-foot statue to King

By Elliott Brack  |  Several Gwinnettians are involved with producing an 8-foot bronze statue to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which will be placed in downtown Atlanta on Jan. 16, 2023.  The near-complete clay statue model was unveiled last Thursday in Athens to a gathering of about 100 people, mostly from Gwinnett.

ANOTHER VIEW: The most religious states in USA are also the most violent

By Jack Bernard, contributing columnist |  Georgia’s U.S Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stated the above as a reaction to the Uvalde murders by a teenager using military style assault weapon. After every shooting, gun rights advocates like Rep. Greene say something along the lines of “We must pray.” However, it is an unfortunate fact that prayers alone don’t reduce gun violence.

NEWS BRIEFS: High schoolers participate in PCOM anatomy lesson 

As if in unison, “Ahhh!” could be heard emanating from a worktable in the PCOM Georgia Anatomy Lab as four Gwinnett high school students dissected sheep brains under the guidance of a PCOM Georgia faculty member. They had just learned that the “pons,” shaped like a peanut, is part of the brain stem.
